Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh hosted the 4th meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Power Sector Reforms here on Tuesday for focuses discussion on power sector reforms and implementation of sustainable technologies.

The prestigious meeting was chaired by Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, which brought together Energy Ministers and senior officials from States including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. The meeting focused on collaborative policy development to strengthen DISCOMs, streamline regulatory practices, and promote investments, thereby ensuring affordable and reliable power supply to citizens while maintaining fiscal discipline.

The successful hosting of GoM meeting marks another crucial step in AP's and India’s journey toward creating a sustainable, efficient, and financially healthy power sector. Representatives from AIDA, REC, PFC has presented on the proposed recommendations for strengthening the DISCOMs.

AP Minister for Energy Gottipati Ravi Kumar, extended a warm welcome to Naik and the distinguished delegates and reaffirmed the State's unwavering commitment to driving meaningful reforms in the distribution sector.

He noted that AP under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, is championing forward-looking initiatives to enhance the viability, efficiency, and sustainability of the power sector, making it a fitting host for this high-profile national meeting.

Among others, Aravind Kumar Sharma, Energy Minister, UP, Heeralal Nagar, Energy Minister Rajasthan, along with Gottipati Ravi Kumar and Meghana Sakore Bordikar, MoS, Energy Maharashtra, spoke.

In the opening remarks, Naik highlighted the significance of coordinated reforms to address the financial and operational challenges faced by power distribution companies (DISCOMs).

He appreciated the Government of AP and Gottipati Ravi Kumar for their proactive efforts in hosting this important meeting.

The Union Minister stressed the need for introducing regulatory reforms, restructuring liabilities, and leveraging emerging technologies like renewable integration, storage solutions, and artificial intelligence to ensure a resilient and future-ready power distribution system.

Naik emphasised that timely revision of cost-reflective tariffs, the strengthening of the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) with sufficient benches, and the mandatory implementation of Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustments are essential steps to ensure fair pricing and financial stability. The Minister also highlighted the importance of simplifying and standardising tariff orders and net metering provisions for rooftop solar systems, along with annual tariff revisions linked to inflation indices like WPI, to create a transparent and predictable business environment for utilities and consumers alike.

In addition to regulatory changes, Naik stressed the importance of modern financial and policy frameworks to support the

sector’s growth.
